I was recently diagnosed with sleep apnea and I was advised to purchase a CPAP sleep apnea machine. Are these machines effective in treating sleep apnea? How do CPAP sleep apnea machines work? Where can I purchase them? And, are there some guidelines that I should follow in getting one?

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure or CPAP is usually used to treat sleep apnea. CPAP sleep apnea machines are quite small. Most of them are as big as a shoebox. Some of them can even be smaller. Attached to the machine is a flexible tube connected to a mask that is worn over the nose or mouth. Sometimes, this mask even covers both the nose and the mouth. CPAP sleep apnea machines can prevent sleep apnea by forcing air through the passageway at a high pressure that is usually set by the physician. It’s advisable to bring CPAP sleep apnea machines to the doctor during regular check ups. This will allow the sleep doctor to check the condition of your equipment and adjust its settings if needed. In purchasing CPAP sleep apnea machines, you must always make sure that the device has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Since there are many kinds of CPAP sleep apnea machines in the market, it would not be difficult for you to find one. As a matter of fact, these machines can now be purchased online. The only disadvantage of this is that you would not be able to test the machine before purchasing it and you might end up with a machine that does not suit you. But, if you can find one with a money back guarantee then you could test the machine during the period specified by the advertisement. CPAP sleep apnea machines can also be purchased from a home health care company or a durable medical equipment company. These machines can also be rented and taking this option will allow the user to test the equipment for several weeks before purchasing it. This can be done under the rent-to-own plan. It is important to find a machine that would suit your lifestyle. Of course, you should always consider your budget and the limitations given by your insurance company. After establishing your limitations, you can now go over the features of the CPAP sleep apnea machines that are available to you. If you are a frequent traveler, you can pick a machine that can be adjusted for different altitudes and can be converted to foreign currents. It usually comes with carrying case, making it easy for you to transport it from one place to another. You can also opt for bi-level devices that have a lower pressure for exhalation and higher pressure for inhalation. An auto-adjusting device that can sense varying pressure needs is also available in the market. Because there are many types CPAP sleep apnea machines available in the market, you can easily find one that is right for you.

I’ve been prescribed a CPAP recently and I’m getting one soon at the insistence of my doctor. Since this is my first time to use one, I am wondering if you can give me tips on caring for it, specifically in cleaning the CPAP machine. I tried one at the sleep center and I noticed its got a lot of parts and the cleaning part of it really worries me. A little help on this would be greatly appreciated.

The CPAP machine is today’s most popular choice for the treatment of sleep apnea and in the management of breathing problems experienced by patients having respiratory failure. It works by forcing pressurized air into the airway keeping it open and effectively improving oxygenation. A CPAP machine needs the prescription of a specialist but choosing the machine itself and its accessories would depend on what’s comfortable for you. A durable medical equipment (DME) supplier that is recognized by your medical insurance provider can help you with that. Do not hesitate to ask questions. You can also prolong the life of your CPAP machine if you know how to care for it. Ask your DME supplier how to clean the CPAP machine and its accessories. It is very important that you know how to use the machine and its parts properly, how to store them, when to change some of its parts, and how to clean the CPAP machine. You can ask for tips from your therapist or the product supplier. Be sure also to read the manual that comes along with the product. It always includes instructions on how to clean the CPAP machine properly. Oftentimes, product care of CPAP machine accessories would depend on the manufacturer, but for the CPAP unit, simply wiping it with a damp cloth and wiping it dry or airing it to dry is enough. Do not immerse it in water. The hose may be cleaned with mild detergent and water and airing it to dry. Do not wring the tube or swing it around. You can also hook it up to the CPAP unit and the let CPAP air dry it out. You can also use distilled vinegar-and-water solution in cleaning the hose as a mild disinfectant to prevent bacterial growth. Cleaning the CPAP mask should be done twice weekly, if not daily. Cleaning it with mild detergent and lukewarm water thoroughly removes oil build-up on the part that touches the face. These oils can cause early deterioration of your mask. Wipe it dry with a clean, dry cloth and never in direct sunlight. The humidifier chamber should be cleaned after every use to prevent mineral build-up. Fill the chamber up with soapy water, shake it briskly, rinse, and let it dry. Using a mild detergent and lukewarm water to clean it is often enough; but be sure to read the instruction manual to be sure you are doing the right thing. The head gear may either be hand washed or machine washed using mild detergent but not as often as the other CPAP accessories because constant washing could easily wear out the Velcro. Tubings and filters can be washed with mild soap and water, but some filters are disposables and must be changed after a week or two. Proper use and regular cleaning of the CPAP machine and its parts often ensures proper functioning and prolonged service. Always refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for proper product care or ask your equipment provider. A CPAP machine that’s not working is a CPAP machine that’s not helping.

How do I get myself a CPAP machine complete with my CPAP mask of choice and other accessories without having to shoulder the expenses? Equipments like these are quite expensive for me and I am wondering if it is covered by insurance. What do medical equipment suppliers of CPAP masks require to qualify for insurance coverage?

Continuous positive airway pressure or CPAP is currently the most common mode of treatment for sleep apnea, both obstructive and central. This is also used to aid patients who have problems with respirations or those experiencing respiratory failure. A CPAP machine works by forcing air into the airway at a predetermined amount of pressure. This is to keep the airway open while the patient is asleep. The air is delivered from the machine to the nasal mask through a flexible tube that connects the two. Other optional features of a CPAP machine are air humidifier, pressure adjuster, exhalation pressure relief, and data logging. Choosing a CPAP machine that would work best for you is very critical. First, your physician would have to determine if a CPAP therapy is needed, and how much pressure you would be needing for you to achieve a therapeutic effect. Proper evaluation and diagnostic studies would be carried out for that. He might also give suggestions on which machine or which of the optional features is best. However, choosing the right mask would be up to you. It should be the right fit and comfortable for you. There are a lot of durable medical equipment suppliers of CPAP masks and other CPAP accessories that can help you choose which one is best for you. Medical insurance usually covers purchase or rental of medical equipments such as CPAP machines, CPAP masks and other accessories. Make sure that your durable medical equipment supplier is enrolled in your medical insurance provider. If your durable medical equipment supplier of the CPAP masks and accessories is enrolled or a participating supplier of your medical insurance program, purchase or rentals cost would be shouldered by the insurance provider. Your durable medical equipment supplier may also provide you a list of the different types of CPAP masks where you can choose what you think is most comfortable for you. There are numerous CPAP masks to choose from, they may or may not come with a headgear: full face masks, nasal masks, nasal pillow masks, and nasal prong systems. It would be more advisable to rent the equipment first in order for you to check whether it is working properly for you. Rent-to-own options from your medical equipment supplier are also possible. Durable medical equipment suppliers only provide such equipments like CPAP masks and accessories when it is clearly needed by the patient and if there is a physician’s or a medical specialist’s prescription to back it up. Otherwise, your insurance provider would not reimburse your expenses for that.
